One of the most significant innovations in restorative dentistry today is the use of dental implants. In most situations, for single tooth replacement, it has become the standard of care over a fixed bridge. An implant-supported crown feels like a natural tooth in the mouth, and the teeth on either side of the implant crown do not have to be included in the restoration; thus precious enamel does not have to be ground down. Another benefit is that an implant acts like a tooth root in keeping the surrounding bone from resorbing or shrinking in dimension.
Bone preservation is especially valuable for denture wearers. Dental implants can be life-changing for denture wearers who have struggled for years trying to keep them secure. In social settings, implant-supported denture wearers are able to enjoy the security of knowing their teeth will stay securely in place and function well during conversation and eating.
If you find that you have a tooth or teeth that need to be extracted, it is important to discuss the “implant option” with us prior to the procedure. At our Tyler, Texas dental office, we may recommend a simple socket grafting procedure to be done at the time of extraction that will insure that the post-op bone loss is minimal; therefore, there will be more bone available when we place the implant. The best time to place an implant is within three to six months after the extraction, before the bone in the area starts reducing in height and width. In some cases, the implant can be placed at the time of extraction.
Dental implant systems have been in use for over 25 years. Current systems and techniques have been well designed and refined to offer predictable results with high rates of success and longevity, Don’t hesitate to give us a call if you would like to discuss the “implant option” further. We would be happy to see you for a complimentary consultation if you are wanting to determine if implant dentistry is right for you.

Dr. Burnett’s Implant Education Journey: Dental Implants Tyler Texas
In the Fall of 2008 I made the commitment to further my education in the field of dentistry. As a dentist, I had been restoring on dental implants for the past 20 years, so the next most logical step to take was to learn how to place implants on my own patients. I began my journey taking the Preceptorship in Oral Implantology at the The University of Texas Heath Science Center Dental School at San Antonio. For six months I trekked down to San Antonio several times immersing myself in training from implant dentists from all over the country. After 150 hours of classroom and hands on training I received my certificate of completion from this program.
The next leg of my journey took me to California where I attended the Zimmer Institute for an advanced course in implants placement. In the spring of 2010 I attended the national meeting of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists in New Orleans where I received more training and received my Fellowship award with the ICOI. A few months later I attended another excellent course in Dallas on implant placement. In two years time I have had an estimated 210 hours of education from some of the best dental educators in the country. My implant education will continue as new opportunities present themselves.
